The preliminary findings of a study of 90 cases of suspected elder sexual abuse in Britain are presented.
Abstract
By a ratio of six to one, the victims were female; 85 percent were aged 75 years and older. Almost 90 percent were dependent on their abusers for care. In all but two cases, the abuser was male. Typical impediments for female victims included dementia (77 percent), physical frailty (67 percent), and impaired mobility (48 percent); and for male victims, dementia (46 percent) and stroke and physical frailty (31 percent each). The most common abusers of female victims were sons (55 percent); and of male victims, friends (62 percent). Some 57 percent of all the cases were confirmed as sexual abuse cases, while the remainder were strongly suspect but not proven. 4 tables and 10 references
