This report presents examples of prevention programs that work, programs that are well designed, have demonstrated effectiveness, and can be implemented as part of a comprehensive school safety plan.
Abstract
While several of the most effective programs are broad in scope, the programs should be viewed as components of a comprehensive school safety plan rather than standalone strategies for reducing school violence. The data presented in this document are drawn from three ongoing meta-analytic studies of school-based efforts to prevent and reduce undesirable behaviors among youth. The Anger Coping Program is designed to provide cognitive behavioral training to preadolescent and early adolescent youth. The program includes modeling, role-playing, group problem-solving, and positive reinforcement activities. The BrainPower Program is an attribution retraining intervention designed to reduce peer-directed aggression. The First Step to Success is a best practices early intervention program designed to divert at-risk children from a path leading to an antisocial pattern of behavior. The document describes the Good Behavior Game, program monitoring software, an interpersonal cognitive problem-solving program, peer mediation program, positive adolescent choices training, and teaching students to be peacemakers.
