Following instructions for collecting and analyzing information on school security incidents, prevention strategies, response procedures, and investigative techniques are discussed for a variety of offenses that may occur on school property.
Abstract
Emphasis is placed on security planning, prevention, and containment of incidents. Incident information is the key to these tasks. Incident information should include what happened, where it happened, who was involved, and the nature of the response to the complaint. An incident report form should structure this information. Once security incident data has been collected and recorded on some type of permanent record, it should be used to assist in predicting future security incidents. This requires grouping similar events and determining if patterns are developing in the school. Knowing the approximate time, day of the week, and place where certain types of incidents occur can guide the deployment of staff to the vulnerable areas. Prevention strategies, response procedures, and investigative techniques are discussed for incidents of arson, assaults, bomb threats, burglary, drugs, theft, robbery, sex offenses, trespassing, vandalism, and weapons possession. Attention is also given to incidents of hostagetaking, terrorism, and childnapping. Techniques for search and seizure are also described. Three references and 24 bibliographic entries are provided.
