This report details the activities of the Clark Foundation's five grantmaking programs during 1995.
Abstract
The Children's Program shifted focus from the expansion of intensive family preservation services to the development of more comprehensive community partnerships to protect children. The Justice Program's state-centered initiative began work in three new States (North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina) where policymakers seek to gain control over their sentencing policies and the growth of their prison populations, and to develop and implement highly structured, cost-effective alternatives to incarceration for nonviolent offenders. The New York Neighborhoods Program launched the Neighborhood Partners Initiative to prevent homelessness and strengthen specific communities in Central Harlem and the South Bronx. The Student Achievement Program began working with six urban school systems committed to helping students meet high academic standards by the end of the eighth grade. The Tropical Disease Research Program started to explore a new strategy to improve the health of school-age children in Tanzania and Ghana. The report includes: (1) statistics on grants awarded and grants paid during the year for each of the Programs; (2) statistics on state-centered sentencing reform efforts in addition to the ones described above; (3) an auditor's report; (4) a list of Foundation publications; and (5) information on how to apply for a grant.
