A systematic random sample taken from the New York State Driver License File provided data on drunk driving offenders and their recidivism from 1978 to 1988.
Abstract
The file contained 15,032 drivers with at least one conviction for driving while intoxicated or driving while ability impaired. Results revealed that the proportion of male offenders aged 20 and younger continued to decrease through the 1980's, while the proportion of female offenders aged 21 and older increased. In addition, the recidivism rate for female offenders began to parallel the male recidivism rate after the mid-1980's. Factors that may have affected these trends include the law regarding age 21 for purchasing alcohol, the change in women's roles and lifestyles, and the changing attitudes of the public and the police toward female drinking and driving.
