While death in the line of duty has been the subject of studies and reports for several decades, a new area of study involves police officer deaths resulting from off-duty confrontations.
Abstract
Recent Uniform Crime Reports indicate that off-duty confrontations account for about 12 to 14 percent of all incidents in which police officers are killed. Police departments realize that their officers have and will become involved in off-duty incidents; many departments have begun to provide training and materials on off-duty survival. Recent off-duty incidents involving police officers in California are briefly summarized to demonstrate important issues and learning points. The incidents highlight procedures police officers should follow in off-duty confrontations and emphasize the need to have a survival plan even when not on duty.
