Because, over time, the French gendarmerie is no longer a strictly rural law enforcement organization, conflict with the national police has often resulted, particularly in the realm of criminal investigations.
Abstract
This article reviews the efforts of both agencies to resolve their differences. The clarification and complementarity of the roles derive primarily from the public prosecutor's office, but there must also be coordination at the national level. First efforts at harmonization were begun in 1989, but it was not until 1990 that a formal agreement was signed to work out their differences and define each organization's role. 22 notes and 24 references
