This is a selection of readings about how illegal drugs and their use are both perceived and dealt with in many contemporary western societies, especially in Britain.
Abstract
This volume takes as its starting point the belief that most of what is commonly understood about drugs, their effects and the policies introduced to resolve the accompanying problems is often inaccurate, confused and exaggerated. Authors of the articles presented here attempt to dispel, counter, and question common misconceptions surrounding illicit drugs and drug users. The book was compiled in such a way that each section builds progressively upon the foundations provided by the preceding topic areas. Topics covered include: (1) Prominent Drugs and Their Effects; (2) The Nature of Addiction; (3) Keeping Control of Drugs and Drug Users; (4) Treatment and Rehabilitation; (5) Drugs Education; (6) Moral Panics, Drugs and Drug Use; (7) The Problem Today; (8) Drugs and Crime; (9) The War on Drugs - Can It Be Won? (10) The Legalization of Drugs? (11) Drugs in Sport: Moral Dilemmas. References, figures, tables, notes
