This collection of over 250 primary documents deals with debates over the use and abuse of drugs, laws controlling drugs in the United States, and drug legalization.
Abstract
The documents include court cases, speeches, laws, opinion pieces, and other documents that bring to life the controversies surrounding drug issues. Explanatory introductions to the documents aid users in understanding the various arguments and illuminate the significance of each document. The documents are organized according to 13 parts: (1) drug policy in the 19th century; (2) early expansion of Federal drug control; (3) Harrison Act; (4) Supreme Court Decisions on the Harrison Act; (5) State anti-drug laws; (6) marijuana policies in the early years; (7) drug policy to World War II; (8) drug policy from World War II through the 1950's; (9) medicalization of addiction and drug treatment; (10) drug policy in the 1960's and 1970's; (11) marijuana policy after the 1960's; (12) crack cocaine and drug policy from the 1980's, and (13) drug legalization. 28 references
