Abstract
Treatment programs implemented for drug-abusing inmates include a cognitive approach, intensive case management approach, residential treatment, and in-jail methadone maintenance. Currently, drug treatment in criminal justice settings is a major part of the National Drug Strategy. A Bureau of Justice Statistics Special Report published in 1990, based primarily upon surveys of women in State prisons in 1979 and 1986, shows the percentages of women incarcerated for drug offenses to be greater than those for men. This collection of articles includes data on determinants of recent substance abuse and characteristics of drug-abusing inmates. 10 footnotes, 7 figures, 28 tables, 317 references, and 1 appendix
