This curriculum provides information and guidance for youth in developing the skills they will need to understand their own or others' alcohol and drug problems.
Abstract
The first section provides some basic information about drugs and drug abuse: how much juveniles are using drugs, why they might be using drugs, the link to HIV/AIDS, the addiction process, types and effects of drugs, and modes of treatment. This section is intended as a reference for those who work with youth. Another section focuses on information and techniques needed in working with individuals from various racial and ethnic groups. This is followed by a discussion of peer educator/youth involvement programs and guidelines for the effective uses of group experiences. The aforementioned sections provide general information useful for the group leader. The last sections present the outlines and exercises for each of the instruction sessions. The first session examines why people use drugs and alcohol, who is affected by drug and alcohol abuse, what a user can do about it, and where a user can turn. The curriculum uses videos, role plays, and group exercises that are designed for small group settings in youth service programs, after- school programs, and community centers. Resources and references encompass treatment resources for youth and their families, organizations and programs, materials and program information, funding opportunities, the Radar Network, State alcoholism and drug abuse program directors, and 52 references
