The 20th anniversary edition of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) highlights the accomplishments of the agency and changes in drug enforcement since the agency was created.
Abstract
The issue provides a brief history of the Federal Government's drug enforcement efforts and explains the creation and role of the DEA as part of that effort. Service contributions of each of the DEA administrators since October 1973 are reviewed. The agency's demand reduction programs, including the Sports Drug Awareness Program, "Do Drugs- Do Time" program, law enforcement training, community- based programs and workplace programs are explained. Tribute is paid to persons killed in the service of the DEA during the agency's brief history. A review of several major DEA operations highlights the importance of drug asset forfeiture as an effective means of infiltrating major drug trafficking operations. A series of maps is used to illustrate how much drug traffick routes have changed over the last 20 years.
