These proceedings from an Australian workshop on drug education focus on cooperation with the mass media to provide community drug education.
Abstract
Addresses by representatives of Western Australia's government voice that government's commitment to health promotion. Other keynote addresses examine how the media control Australia's drug policy agenda, the minimization of pitfalls in dealing with the media, and the use of current affairs programs for the coverage of drug issues. Other papers focus on the cultivation of a media and drug education liaison, mass media drug education campaigns, community drug education, and school drug education. Some of the main sub-themes in the proceedings pertained to non-media drug education programs, research, multicultural considerations, drug-related policy, and computers in drug education. Twenty-five participatory workshop sessions dealt with a wide range of issues. Some provided skill-development opportunities, such as how to use the print media and airways, the use of drama to investigate media influence, and how to counter alcohol advertising. Others dealt with ways that media could be used in school drug education and role playing. Appended evaluation summary and recommendations.
