Feature articles include three articles that deal directly with drug law enforcement tactics and four articles that deal indirectly with law enforcement tactics that could be applied to drug law enforcement.
Abstract
The opening feature article provides guidelines for planning and conducting drug raids. Among the safety tips are that plans and tactics be kept simple, that command unity be maintained, that superior numbers and weaponry be ensured, that the element of surprise be maintained, that the team be well-trained and managed, that speed be used, and that team members stay under cover when approaching the target. A second article on drug law enforcement describes the techniques of a "knock-and-talk" consensual search and the benefits it yields whether or not suspects allow the search of their residence. A third article describes the components of problem-oriented policing, with particular attention to countering ongoing patterns of drug trafficking in particular geographic areas. Remaining articles consider the proper use of criminal histories to locate and arrest wanted criminals; how to deal with armed juveniles; recent efforts to enhance border control; and a case study of a planned kidnapping, extortion, and murder plot.
