Many schools have aftercare activities and counseling for the student who completes a drug and alcohol treatment program. The aftercare program involves schools working cooperatively with parents and community services. This article describes the aftercare program in detail and the implementation evaluation based on data collected from monthly structured interviews with the adolescents, parents, and school counselors.
Abstract
The aftercare service is evaluated using an exploratory research strategy with multiple measures of adolescent outcome, for example, pre-test, post-test control group design, and evaluation of the program process and implementation. The aftercare service assigns a case manager as service coordinator and advocate for an adolescent being discharged from a drug and alcohol treatment program. The case manager is a master's level clinician, with experience teaching and counseling. An initial evaluation is done with the adolescent and parents while the adolescent is still in treatment. Overall, the results show that the aftercare service helps the adolescent to remain drug free and adhere to the aftercare plan. There are four areas of concern for further study: (1) stress of relapse/failure; (2) parents need support; (3) smoking increases to a heavy and frequent rate; (4) recovery as a dynamic process. 6 references (Author abstract modified)
