This 1980 annual report of the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) presents statistics on drug abuse in the United States during the year, based on reports from hospital emergency rooms and medical examiners in 26 major metropolitan areas and about 180 hospital emergency rooms from outside the reporting areas.
Abstract
The statistics cover only drug abuse episodes that have resulted in an emergency medical situation or a death. Data are presented on the episodes involving tranquilizers, antipsychotics, sedatives, analgesics, amphetamines, cocaine, antidepressants, marijuana, hallucinogens, and other drugs. Data are also grouped by age, race, sex, the source of the substance, the reported motivation for using the drug, and geographic area. Statistics are also given for over 40 individual drugs. An explanation of the DAWN system and an appendix presenting the reporting forms are also included.
