These 15 papers describe 15 demonstration projects funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and using innovative clinical approaches to improve drug abuse treatment.
Abstract
The research demonstration initiatives were intended to create new or expanded treatment capacity and to increase the effectiveness and treatment of drug abuse by developing and testing innovative interventions and improvements in standard treatment. The programs included methadone programs, including a mobile treatment program; residential treatment models, including a program for persons with dual diagnoses of drug abuse and mental disorders; case management programs; and multimodality programs that included a modified therapeutic community, outpatient treatment, a day treatment program, and a vocational enhancement program. Implementation issues included the recruitment and assignment of participants, the development and implementation of standardized control and experimental interventions, data collection and management, project monitoring and administration, and the resolution of conflicts between clinical and research requirements. Other issues included the management and administration of subcontracted treatment providers, interactions with bureaucracies, interactions with the community, and unpredictable external events.
