This manual was designed to help mentors/trainers in the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program, working in regional training centers throughout the country, to prepare law enforcement officers who have been selected to present the DARE curriculum in schools.
Abstract
DARE is a preventive drug education program intended to stop drug abuse before it begins by teaching young children techniques aimed at resisting peer pressure to use drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. Police officers assigned to DARE work with several schools, visiting each of them at least one day per week to present the units of an innovative curriculum that stresses self-esteem, taking responsibility for one's behavior, and saying "no" to drug experimentation. The DARE officer conducts assembly programs and classroom visits, holds formal training sessions on drug use for teachers, and sponsors parent meetings that cover signs of drug use, local program resources, and family communication. This manual presents a detailed 9-day agenda for teaching the methodology that has become the hallmark of DARE materials and curriculum.
