This review of the literature concerning training related to domestic assault concludes that the training discussed in the literature tends to focus on the identification of those affected by violence, but that effective assessment and intervention strategies that address the safety of battered women must also be taught.
Abstract
The literature briefly presents topics to be included in clinical training. It does not identify effective training methods, nor does it prescribe appropriate remediation strategies. This literature also fails to consider the long-term impact of domestic violence training on participants beyond the course itself. Efforts to evaluate both the short-term and long-term impacts and effectiveness of any training clearly are needed. Course or training program descriptions that explain their link to causal and intervention theories are needed. Programs should also include training that helps students examine the influence of their personal values, beliefs, and other issues on the intervention strategies and skills they will use. Empirical evaluations that assess the immediate acquisition of knowledge, skills, and application of knowledge, as well as the long-term effects of such training, are also needed to ensure that students are prepared to deal with persons affected by domestic assault. 21 references
