THE ANNUAL REPORT OF THE DR. HENRI VAN DER HOEVEN CLINIC FOR DANGEROUS OFFENDERS DESCRIBES THE GENERAL STRUCTURE OF THE INSTITUTION, THE TREATMENT MODES USED, AND THE OPERATING EXPENSES FOR THE YEAR.
Abstract
REVIEW OF EVENTS SHOWS A DROP IN THE NUMBER OF NEW PATIENTS, PROBABLY BECAUSE OF THE LARGE NUMBER OF PATIENTS ADMITTED THE PREVIOUS YEAR. MANY INTERESTED PARTIES CONTINUE TO VISIT THE CLINIC TO OBSERVE METHODS. A STUDY OF THE CLINIC HAS BEEN COMPLETED BY THE SOCIAL STUDY AND DOCUMENTATION CENTER OF THE MINISTRY OF JUSTICE, AND A NUMBER OF PROJECTS ARE PLANNED FOR THE CLINIC'S 25TH ANNIVERSARY. TREATMENT EFFORTS HAVE CONTINUED TO BALANCE THE NEED TO DEVELOP NEW, RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIORAL PATTERNS IN CLIENTS AGAINST THE NEED TO LIMIT RESPONSIBILITIES BECAUSE OF HIGH RISKS INVOLVED. IN RECENT YEARS, THE NUMBER OF TEAM LEADERS FOR THE TREATMENT TEAMS USED IN THE CLINIC HAS BEEN INCREASED TO PROVIDE 24-HOUR SERVICE. TREATMENT METHODS WHICH HAVE BEEN ESPECIALLY EMPHASIZED ARE SOCIAL PROFICIENCY TRAINING TO ENABLE PATIENTS TO DEAL EFFECTIVELY WITH OTHER PERSONS IN EVERYDAY SITUATIONS AND TRAINING IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF LEISURE ACTIVITIES. ATTENTION HAS FOCUSED ON MAKING TREATMENT AS GOAL-ORIENTED AS POSSIBLE, BOTH THROUGH INTRODUCTION OF GOAL ATTAINMENT SCALING AND THROUGH USE OF A SPECIAL SYSTEM FOR CLASSIFICATION OF PATIENTS' LEVEL OF DEVELOPMENT. A REVIEW OF BUDGETARY MATTERS INDICATES THAT INCREASED COSTS HAVE RESULTED FROM ADDITIONAL PERSONNEL AND PERSONNEL EXPENSES, PERSONNEL TRAINING, AND RAPIDLY RISING ENERGY COSTS. A SERIES OF APPENDED TABLES SHOWS THE NUMBER OF PATIENTS AND CARE DAYS, CHARACTERISTICS AND ADMISSIONS OF PATIENTS, INSTRUCTION PROVIDED, MEDICINE, PATIENTS' ABSENCES WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM CLINIC, PUBLICATIONS ABOUT WORK, STAFF TRAINING COURSES, AND PERSONNEL FIGURES. A COPY OF THE ANNUAL REPORT OF THE WORKS COUNCIL IS SUPPLIED.
