This volume differentiates divorce mediation from divorce therapy and presents concepts, processes, techniques, and training for divorce mediation.
Abstract
After comparing the goals and processes of divorce mediation and divorce therapy, the book presents a systems view of therapy, mediation, and litigation for intervention in divorce. A chapter reviews theories and schemata pertaining to the divorce process and analyzes their impact on the mediation process. Three mediation models and their characteristic mediation techniques are discussed, followed by a description of a marital assessment process that couples seeking mediation may use to help them understand the reasons for their decision to divorce. A discussion of comediation considers combinations of professions and sexes for comediation as well as the ramifications of each. A chapter describes the emotional dynamics of couples using mediation, details ways of identifying behavior patterns, and suggests strategies for addressing them. Other topics covered are the inclusion of children in mediation, legal considerations for mental health professional mediators, and education and training for divorce mediators. For individual chapters, see NCJ 100689-95. Chapter references and subject index.
