This article examines the impact of automation on the DNA laboratory and provides guidelines for the introduction of automation into the laboratory environment.
Abstract
Automation is commonly viewed by the forensics community as a way of increasing the efficiency and throughput of DNA extraction. As the number of DNA samples being processed continues to rise, more laboratories are considering the move to laboratory automation. However, when making the decision to purchase an automated system for the laboratory, there are several important and basic questions that must be asked: (1) how will the automation fit into the workflow of the lab; (2) what level of automation is possible for the laboratories’ processes; (3) what level of automation is right for the laboratory; and (4) how will introducing an automated system affect lab personnel and productivity? In answering these questions, it is necessary to understand the types of automated instruments available, such as integration of simplified robotics and liquid handling. This article attempts to answer these questions and in doing so, provide guidance for the introduction of automation into the laboratory environment.
