This article discusses the effects that both a disability and emotional abuse can have upon individuals and their families and how the convergence of these two experiences can exacerbate one another.
Abstract
This article discusses the existence of a disability and how it can trigger emotional abuse, and suggestions for treatment are offered to help professionals. Topics explored include the prevalence of emotional abuse among people with disabilities, historical perspective of the treatment of people with disabilities, impact of abuse on disability, interaction of societal stigma and disability, the impact of trauma on disability, disability as a trigger for emotional abuse and trauma, and suggestions for treatment. It is emphasized that professionals, who are in a position of credibility, can influence individual healing and advocate for societal changes, reducing discrimination and the heightened vulnerability of the disabled to emotional abuse.
