Based on information presented in other chapters in this monograph, this chapter provides an overview of the current status of drug abuse treatment in prisons and jails, drug abuse treatment approaches, evaluations, special issues, and recommendations developed by the group of criminal justice practitioners and researchers who attended the National Institute on Drug Abuse technical review on "Drug Abuse Treatment in Prisons and Jails."
Abstract
The summary of the current status of drug abuse treatment in prisons and jails addresses the effectiveness of this treatment; program models; the scope of drug abuse treatment in jails; and the response of prisons and jails to the threat of the AIDS virus, particularly among inmate intravenous drug users. A review of drug treatment approaches encompasses mandatory drug education programs; individual, group, and self-help drug abuse counseling services; comprehensive residential drug treatment units; and transitional services for community re-entry after release from comprehensive and pilot residential programs. The review of evaluative research on inmate drug treatment programs focuses on specific programs, both their processes and outcomes. Recommendations are in the general areas of treatment interventions, research, evaluation, demonstrations, management information, community linkage, training, technical assistance, and funding. 8 references
