ZAIRIAN STUDENTS WERE ASKED TO RATE VARIOUS ACTS ACCORDING TO THE LEVEL OF APPROVAL/DISAPPROVAL; RESULTS OF THE SURVEY AND FACTORS INFLUENCING DISAPPROVAL ARE REPORTED.
Abstract
A SAMPLE OF 523 ZAIRIAN SECONDARY AND POSTSECONDARY STUDENTS RESPONDED TO A THREE-PART QUESTIONNAIRE COVERING OFFENSES AGAINST PERSONS, PROPERTY, AND MORALS. A GROUP OF 38 SUBJECTS WAS LATER INTERVIEWED ORALLY ON A SELECTION OF 46 MORALS OFFENSES WHICH INCLUDED SEXUAL RELATIONS BETWEEN CONSENTING UNMARRIED PERSONS; SEXUAL RELATIONS BETWEEN UNMARRIED AND MARRIED PERSONS WITH AND WITHOUT CONSENT OF THE SPOUSE; RAPE OF YOUNG GIRLS, MARRIED WOMEN, WIDOWS, AND PROSTITUTES; AND HOMOSEXUAL RELATIONS BETWEEN MARRIED AND UNMARRIED MEN AND WOMEN. THE STUDENTS WERE REQUIRED TO RATE THE LEVEL OF GUILT OF EACH PERSON INVOLVED IN EACH ACT ON A SCALE OF 0 TO 10. THE RESULTING DATA WERE SUBJECTED TO TWO METHODS OF FACTORIAL ANALYSIS INVOLVING CORRELATES AND PRINCIPAL FACTORS. FOUR MAJOR DIMENSIONS WHICH INTERVENE IN MORAL DISAPPROVAL ARE SUGGESTED BASED ON THE ANALYSES: (1) CIVIL STATUS OF THE PERSONS AND PARTICULARLY OF THE WOMAN; (2) DEGREE OF CONSENT OF THE INTERESTED PARTIES; (3) NORMAL OR ABNORMAL CHARACTER OF THE ACT; AND (4) PASSION AS OPPOSED TO MONETARY GAIN AND SEXUAL SATISFACTION IN TERMS OF MOTIVATION. OTHER INFLUENCING FACTORS INCLUDE THE SEX OF THE PERSON BEING JUDGED, THE VARIETY OF PARTNERS, AND THE VICTIM'S SITUATION AND RELATIONS WITH THE ACTOR. DETAILED DESCRIPTIONS OF THE ANALYSIS METHODOLOGY AND SUPPORTING DATA IN TABULAR AND GRAPHIC FORM ARE INCLUDED. REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED. -- IN FRENCH.
