These 41 papers present recent theories and research findings regarding a variety of current issues in corrections, including the role of prisons, the realities of prison life, the role of the courts in correctional reform, the debate over rehabilitation, community-based corrections, and other issues.
Abstract
Individual papers focus on the scope and structure of the correctional system in the United States, trends in correctional populations, the characteristics of inmates, inmate adjustment to imprisonment, inmate-staff relations, U.S. Supreme Court decisions regarding prisons, prison reform, and empirical findings regarding the effectiveness of corrections and inmate treatment programs. Additional papers examine the role of community corrections in an era of retribution, special issues related to probation and parole, the use of electronic monitoring of offenders, and the role of victims in community corrections decisionmaking. Further papers discuss mentally ill offenders, elderly offenders, juvenile female offenders, the impact of AIDS and tuberculosis on corrections, the privatization of corrections, corrections costs, and capital punishment.
