STUDY OF THE EFFICACY OF GROUPING DELINQUENT YOUTH STUDENTS AND ASSIGNING THEM TEACHERS ON THE BASIS OF THE YOUTHS' SUCCESSIVE STAGES OF INTERPERSONAL MATURITY.
Abstract
THIS METHOD OF ASSIGNING WARDS TO WORKERS WHOSE SENSITIVITIES, TALENTS, AND INTERESTS ARE APPROPRIATE FOR THEM HAS BEEN USED SUCCESSFULLY IN PAROLE SETTINGS. IT WAS PREDICTED THAT GREATER PERSONAL AND SOCIAL AS WELL AS ACADEMIC GAINS WOULD BE MADE IN CLASSROOMS WHICH HAVE A MATCHED TEACHER. ALSO, IT WAS HYPOTHESIZED THAT THE PROJECT TEACHERS WOULD GAIN GREATER SATISFACTION IN WORKING WITH THEIR STUDENTS. AN EVALUATION OF THE PROJECT'S EFFECTIVENESS REVEALED THAT HOMOGENEOUS CLASSROOMS WITH A MATCHED TEACHER HAVE SOME POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE STUDENTS. CERTAIN GROUPS OF STUDENTS MADE THE MOST PROGRESS IN THE AREAS OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPROVED SELF-CONCEPT WHERE AS OTHERS MADE GREATER GAINS IN THE AREA OF PERSONAL GROWTH. IT IS FELT THAT FURTHER INVESTIGATION OF APPROPRIATE TEACHING STYLES AND TECHNIQUES WILL HELP CLARIFY THE METHODOLOGY NECESSARY FOR WORKERS WITH JUVENILE DELINQUENTS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
