STUDIES ON THE DETERRENT EFFECTS OF CRIMINAL SANCTIONS ARE IGNORING AN IMPORTANT FACTOR IF THEY DO NOT ADDRESS THEMSELVES TO THE ISSUE OF PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE SANCTIONS (PRIOR TO CRIME COMMISSION).
Abstract
CITING A SURVEY OF PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE OF CRIMINAL SANCTIONS IN CALIFORNIA WHICH REVEALED THAT THE GREAT MAJORITY OF PERSONS SIMPLY DO NOT KNOW CRIMINAL SANCTIONS ACCURATELY. THE IMPACT OF THIS KNOWLEDGE ON THE BODY OF RESEARCH ON THE DETERRENT EFFECTS OF SANCTIONS IS SIZEABLE. THE AUTHOR HOPES THAT FUTURE STUDIES WILL NOT BE SUBJECT TO THE SAME SHORTCOMINGS.
