This anthology contains articles that highlight sociological concepts key to the study of deviance and that examine a wide range of specific types of behavior.
Abstract
The book features articles that look at drugs, sex, medicine, relationships, sports, work, and deviant subcultures to provide a basis for understanding central sociological ideas. These include labeling, rationalization processes, motives, and the experience of deviance. It also includes articles that provide insights into the role of power in the definition and perception of deviance. The articles cover such topics as rape, transgender behavior, and child abuse, as well as a variety of types of deviance that touch closer to home for many students: sports deviance, student drinking, mistreatment of the elderly, stuttering, cheating among college students, and faculty malfeasance. Each article contains an introduction that frames the piece in a larger context in terms of conceptual and theoretical issues, and also explains central issues, key concepts, and relationships among topics covered.
