This article examines the police agencies of Japan and the Republic of Korea in light of their historical development.
Abstract
Japan, which had imposed an oppressive police force on both its own people and in the Korea it annexed in 1910, has since developed a police force dedicated to serving the populace, while the Korean police serve their government. Reasons for this, including the intervention of the United States in both instances, are analyzed. Footnotes, charts and 25 references are given. (Author abstract modified)
