Crime statistics from the nine main campuses in the State University System of Florida and the nine adjacent cities and nine surrounding counties were analyzed to develop a campus security decisionmaking profile that would include recommendations to enhance campus security in Florida.
Abstract
A secondary analysis was performed on archival data from university records, State government records, and a 1990 survey of university police chiefs. Results revealed that the Florida universities have experienced and probably will continue to experience a full range of crimes. Property crimes are more frequent than violent crimes; larceny is by far the most common crime. The crime rate on each campus is lower than the rate in the surrounding community. Significant differences exist among campuses with respect to crime rates and police resources. Findings indicated the feasibility of developing a campus security decisionmaking profile and the need for continued monitoring of trends in campus crime, levels of police resources, and other factors and for lobbying for additional security resources for the three largest universities.
