This document presents recommendations to Weed and Seed sites for the development and implementation of a sustainability plan.
Abstract
Over 300 Weed and Seed sites have been designated by the Community Capacity Development Office (CCDO) since the original inception of Operation Weed and Seed in 1991. Weed and Seed projects bring together a diverse group of representatives to address crime, socioeconomic challenges, and the physical deterioration of communities. It is important that Weed and Seed sites develop sustainability plans within their first 2 years so that operations can be sustained beyond the funding commitment of CCDO, which may last up to 5 years. This document provides recommendations, checklists, and worksheets designed to guide site coordinators and steering committees in the development of a sustainability plan. Sustaining Weed and Seed sites depends on making the focal point of the sustainability strategy the continuation or expansion of the programs, services, or initiatives led by the partnering organizations. This strategy connects the activities of Weed and Seed directly to the different resources needed for its support. The concept of sustainability dimensions is used to identify the action steps necessary to address deficits and attract partners and resources. Descriptions are presented of the dimensions of sustainability (structural effort, community impact, and resource development) and potential indicators are identified for measuring a site's performance. Assessing past performance of programs and services and identifying potential gaps in services are an important part of sustainability planning. Finally, the shared commitment of the community and partnering organizations is key to the development of a sustainability plan. Web resources, bibliography
