This report includes background papers and recommendations from a workshop conducted in 1986 that focused on developing mental health programs for youth and their families in four major ethnic groups: Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and Native Americans.
Abstract
An overview examines issues raised by minority professionals who were surveyed regarding such issues as the external and internal factors affecting the mental health of minority youth, perceptions that determine the use of mental health services in minority communities, the inclusion of social and cultural factors in programs, and the subpopulations most in need of programs. The discussions emphasize that intracultural differences exist within minority groups. The workshop recommendations focused on policy, research, training, access, assessment, family involvement, and community education and resource development. The Child and Adolescent Service System Program (CASSP) Technical Assistance Center at Georgetown University and the National Institute of Mental Health plan to conduct several efforts to address these issues. Descriptions of current programs and appended background paper, lists of workshop participants and planners, workshop agenda, and list of State CASSP projects.
