Although the Detroit Police Department has had to reduce its personnel, crime rates still have remained lower than those of the mid-1970's.
Abstract
A total of 97 officers laid off in 1980 were recalled and retrained before being given assignments. No officers were killed in 1981, although one officer was injured. Crime prevention was given high priority in 1981. A total of 850 programs were conducted for 70,000 citizens, who learned about self-protection, burglary and robbery prevention, senior citizen safety, and home security. During the year, the Tactical Services Sections Section scout car crews responded to 10,480 police runs and made 1,782 felony arrests, while the Fatal Squad of the Traffic Administration Unit investigated 123 traffic accident deaths. A total of 505 homicides were recorded, with 70.5 percent closed by successful investigation and arrests, and 30,046 vehicles were reported stolen, of which 23,341 were recovered. In addition, the Organized Crime Section was involved in arresting 10 persons in a huge national narcotic trafficking ring. Offense, arrest and disposition, accident, and juvenile statistics are provided, along with photographs.
