The variable description list and codebook are presented for a data set of statistics on crime committed in 1960 in 47 States and dispositions imposed, collected to assess the deterrent effect of punishment. A codebook to the data file is supplied.
Abstract
The introduction describes the data collection, the file structure, data standards, and codebook information. For each State, the study determined the reported crime rate, the probability of prison commitment, and time served when sentenced for the FBI's seven Index crimes. Also included in the data file are 11 variables of socioeconomic status and per capita police expenditures. The probability of imprisonment is the ratio of commitment to the number of offenses known to have occurred in a year.
