This Australian study presents data for police on-duty murders by any means and for malicious woundings of officers by gunshot or bomb blast while on duty for 1964-1983.
Abstract
Data were initially obtained from public and private sources, and each police agency involved was invited to confirm the data and supply missing data. The level of missing data was acceptable for all variables but 'hour.' Data for each variable are provided separately for each police State or territorial jurisdiction. Aggregate data for the Nation as a whole are not included. In addition to providing information on the number of officer murders and woundings by gunshot and bomb blast, the report presents data on selected victim, temporal, situational, and offender characteristics. Victim characteristics include age, rank, gender, marital status, time of service, branch, posting, armed, and anatomy. Temporal variables encompass the hour, day, and month. Situational characteristics cover the weapon, whether in the company of other officers, and the nature of the attack. Offender characteristics include gender, age, and whether in the company of other offenders. A narrative summary of the findings concludes the report. Appended data on the number of sworn officers by State and Territory and the populations served; 12 references.
