Abstract
Opening statements by Senators Stevens and D'Amato provide an overview of how the military has been used to support drug interdiction efforts. Lawrence Korb, the Assistant Secretary of Defense, testifies on the contributions of various military branches and joint programs with the Customs Service. Particular attention is given to equipment and personnel loans, technical assistance, the sharing of intelligence information, and how the military is involved in the National Narcotics Border Interdiction System. Budgeting issues in the cooperative effort are also considered. Lt. Gen. Dean Tice, who heads the Defense Department's office on drug enforcement, testifies on the activities of his office, budgeting and funding issues, the logistics of procuring military equipment for drug enforcement operations, and the expansion of military drug interdiction efforts. Neil Lageman of the U.S. Customs Service testifies on his agency's cooperation with the military in drug enforcement and describes international drug trafficking patterns.
