Modifications based on defensible space design principles were responsible for positive changes in residents of New York City housing projects.
Abstract
The modifications reduced crime and vandalism, increased resident satisfaction and a sense of security, and improved the quality of environmental maintenance. The chapter (1) examines the contextual circumstance relating to the individual projects and residents that may account for the differential effects of the physical changes and (2) evaluates defensible design concepts. Study data and instruments are included. (Author summary modified)
