Analysis of the deaths of 282 probationers in New York State during 1984 showed that nonnatural causes accounted for the majority of deaths and that the main causes of death differed from those in the general New York population.
Abstract
The 346 probationers who died represented 1 percent of the 28,797 cases closed during the year. The probationers who died were significantly older than the general probation population. Homicide, accidents, and suicide accounted for the majority of probationer deaths, whereas heart disease and cancer accounted for the majority of deaths in the general population. Homicide was a more common cause of probationer deaths in New York City than in other areas of the State. Footnotes, tables, charts.
