Abstract
Major findings from this report include: in 2010, judicial executions were carried out in at least 23 countries; at least 527 executions were carried out in 2010 (this does not include China, which does not publish figures on its use of the death penalty); 2,024 new death sentences were imposed in 67 countries in 2010; by the end of 2010, at least 17, 833 individuals were under sentence of death worldwide; beheading, electrocution, hanging, lethal injection, and shooting were the methods of execution used in 2010; and 10 women and 4 men remained under sentence of death by stoning in Iran at the end of 2010. This report from Amnesty International presents data on the global use of the death penalty for the year 2010. Data for the report were obtained from various sources including official government statistics (where available), nongovernmental and inter-governmental organizations, human rights defenders, the media, and through field research. The figures presented in the report are those that were able to be confirmed through Amnesty International's research. The primary purpose of the report is to provide a resource to those who wish to have an idea of the global picture on the use of the death penalty and judicial executions. The data in the report are presented at both the global and regional level. The regions include the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe and Central Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Figures and annexes
