This article describes the various types of paper shredders and issues to be considered in the selection of a shredder.
Abstract
The security risks involved in disposing of intact papers a company wishes to remain confidential warrant the use of paper shredders. Crosscut models cut paper both lengthwise and widthwise to produce confetti, and straight-cut shredders cut paper lengthwise to produce long strips. Crosscut shredders offer tighter security and reduce bulk waste. Straight-cut shredders cost less, shred a given volume of paper faster, and produce a product that can be recycled as packing material. Both crosscut and straight-cut shredders come in various sizes, ranging from diminutive desk-side models designed to handle a few sheets at a time to centralized units that can consume large volumes of paper at a time. Factors in selecting a shredder are the degree of security required, the volume and kind of material to be shredded, the number of people that will be using the shredder, and whether centralized or satellite units are preferable.
