The first international symposium on drug abuse testing took place in Lloret de Mar, Spain, in March 1990, and focused on the increase in drug abuse and testing programs to screen for drug use.
Abstract
Symposium participants discussed organizational parameters in the reliability of drug testing, including sample collection, chain of custody, laboratory strategies, and legal and regulatory aspects. Analytical methodology reviews involved description and critical issues for the major presumptive and confirmatory techniques. These reviews included many immunological methodologies and reports on gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric techniques. Participants also examined the interpretation of test results, particularly metabolic, pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, pharmacogenetic, and clinical aspects of testing. In addition, consideration was given to international harmonization issues, such as quality control and accreditation. Finally, participants discussed drug testing in the workplace and in the military, forensic constraints and trends in drug testing, drug interactions, and urinalysis. References, tables, and figures
