The curriculum and supporting materials in this document are guidelines for the delivery of performance- based law enforcement training in "cultural diversity" as specified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.
Abstract
The training specifications advise that the instruction described in this manual trains police officers in how to interact professionally with a broad spectrum of cultural groups. The curriculum content complements locally developed training that addresses the history, customs, religious practices, and core values of cultural groups within the local community. One learning-activity description focuses on a student self-assessment, which helps students to assess their own level of cultural sensitivity and experience in interacting with cultural groups. Another learning activity described is the student review of cultural-contact videos presented in the course. The manual's section on curriculum outlines the content of each topic presented. Topics are the cultural makeup of California; the benefits of valuing diversity; human rights, prejudice, and discrimination; perceptions of cultural groups; cultural stereotyping versus profiling; and strategies for effective cultural contacts. For each curriculum topic, the manual lists instructional goals. The manual's concluding section contains supporting materials and references.
