Intended for use by police trainers, this manual explores cultural differences and values so that law enforcement professionals can understand and address the demographic changes and interact effectively with people of diverse cultures in their communities.
Abstract
The readings, charts, and exercises are intended to assist current and potential police personnel in understanding the rationale for stereotypes and prejudices; assess their own stereotypes and prejudices; identify barriers to growth; and provide insight into their own attitudes regarding racism, sexism, and biases. They are also intended to clarify new ways of acting and doing things and explore change theories and strategies. Individual sections of the manual focus on multiculturalism; prejudice, stereotypes, and values; sexism and other gender issues; power; case studies and role plays; and changing the culture. The manual recommends presenting the general information in large classes and limiting classes involving discussion and the examining of personal values to 20-30 participants, seated at tables in teams of 5 or 6.
