The purpose of this book is to outline the principles, techniques, and procedures that will assist an organization in avoiding or successfully managing a crisis.
Abstract
Solutions are aimed toward small and medium-sized companies, as well as mid-sized Federal, State, and local governments. Emphasis is placed on using critical incident management to approach small or mid-sized problems before they become major problems. Specific issues addressed in the book include: (1) organizing for a potential critical incident; (2) matrix management; (3) leadership and decisionmaking; (4) using experts and consultants; (5) developing a crisis action plan; (6) confronting the news media; (7) managing the stress of leaders and victims in a crisis; and (8) intervention skills. The author identifies a number of basic principles of critical incident management, including planning and preparation, defining the scope of a potential problem, selecting the goal or desired outcome, establishing good communications, and budgeting adequately. 58 notes, 37 references
