Georgia's Criminal Justice Coordinating Council was created in 1981 to respond exclusively to the needs of the State's criminal justice system.
Abstract
Significant activities of the council during 1989-1990 involved criminal justice system coordination and information dissemination, legislative and policy proposals, advice to the Governor, the development and prioritization of a criminal justice policy agenda, facilitation of criminal justice system communication and interaction, and grant administration. The council sent about 250 criminal justice surveys to its members, criminal justice organizations, Federal and State agencies, and private citizens. The council then selected and prioritized issues to study and take action on in accord with survey findings. Recommended issues to address during 1991 concern jail and prison overcrowding, funding and revenues, sentencing reform, juvenile justice, crime prevention, substance abuse, public education, court reform, victim assistance, criminal justice system coordination and improvement, personnel and training, and criminal justice information systems. The role of the Statistical Analysis Bureau, organized through several of Georgia's criminal justice agencies, is detailed, along with the Governor's Advisory Committee on Crime and Punishment. Federal grants awarded to Georgia during 1989-1990 are noted.
