This book presents an integrated analysis of sentencing powers and principles by examining drug offenses, white collar crimes, violent crimes, dangerous offenders, and mentally abnormal offenders.
Abstract
The book concentrates on the relationship between sentencing policies and penal policies and assesses the impact of recent legislation and sentencing principles on policy formation. The book also examines ethical and moral issues in sentencing policy development. The discussion emphasizes the development of sentencing policies through an examination of the impact of recent legislation and sentencing guidance in relevant key areas. Comparisons are made with other jurisdictions where ethical and moral issues in sentencing policy development are addressed. The relationship between sentencing principles, sentencing guideline judgments, and legal references is assessed in terms of its impact on sentencing policy formation. The author concludes that respective roles of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government require constant clarification and direction if sentencing policies are to remain an integral part of criminal justice policies. He offers suggestions on how to facilitate the attainment of this objective. 194 references and 1 figure
