Abstract
Nine selections focus on the overall structure of the criminal justice system in the United States, covering issues such as criminal behavior, drugs, organized crime, and white collar crime. Six articles which discuss crime impact on the victim consider crime's psychological impact, victims' rights, and the hidden victims of the criminal justice system. Among the topics discussed in nine selections on police are police stress, police brutality, terrorism, police suicide, and police ethics. Nine articles on the process by which defendants are moved through the judicial system discuss such issues as prosecutors, courts, the jury process, plea bargaining, and children's rights in court. Among the issues reviewed in the eight selections on the juvenile justice system are effective ways to address violent juvenile crime, juvenile detention, and street gangs. Twelve selections consider the current state of America's penal system and the effects of sentencing, probation, overcrowding, and the impact of private correctional institutions on offender rehabilitation. 34 charts and graphs, glossary, subject index, and 216-item bibliography.
