This October 1985 hearing before a U.S. congressional committee examined the criminal victimization of the elderly; Federal, State, and local resources for dealing with the problem; and proposed Federal legislation related to these issues.
Abstract
Two elderly crime victims, one of whom had experienced five burglaries, described their experiences and their fears. A U.S. Department of Justice official; a law enforcement official from Sun City, Ariz.; a representative of the American Association of Retired Persons; and a judge were also witnesses. One of the proposed laws would establish a central Federal office to provide information and to coordinate Federal prevention and assistance programs related to crime and the elderly. The other law would allow tax credits for the purchase of residential security devices. Written statements are included. Appendixes present correspondence, a statement of the rights of victims and witnesses, addresses of national organizations concerned with criminal victimization, and results of a survey of State officials.
