Using data from the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, this volume presents statistics on total crimes and specific crime index offenses for the United States and for individual State and local jurisdictions during 1991.
Abstract
The data cover violent crime, property crime, variations by time and geographical location, the number of offenses cleared, the total arrests, characteristics of persons arrested, juvenile delinquency statistics, and law enforcement employment. The total number of index crimes reported increased 3 percent from 1990 to nearly 15 million offenses reported to law enforcement in 1991. Increases ranged from 2 percent in the Nation's cities to 5 percent in rural counties. Crimes reported in Southern States accounted for 37 percent of the total, followed by 24 percent in Western States, 21 percent in Midwestern States, and 18 percent in the Northeast.
